We are honored to have guest bloggers who contribute to our monthly blogs from their unique perspectives! We hope you enjoy this post from Cristina Colon, the Director of HR at Habitat for Humanity of Wake County.

Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Wake County (Habitat Wake) has worked with community members to build inclusive neighborhoods through public education and by challenging stigmas about affordable housing. Historic discrimination in U.S. housing policy has been a driver of inequalities that persist today. At Habitat Wake, we know we have a responsibility to raise awareness about the continuing effects of these policies and to advocate for opportunities that increase affordable housing access for all.

While the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) leads housing efforts at the national level, building codes, zoning and other land use regulations are legislated at the state and local government levels. Habitat Wake plays a crucial role in addressing affordable housing needs in our community by advocating to change policies and systems to improve access to adequate affordable housing at the local, state, and federal level. Our entire organization is committed to moving the needle in the right direction through concerted efforts across all departments.

We have a passion and a drive to achieve our vision to live in a world where everyone has a decent place to live. In our endeavors, we prioritize ongoing training initiatives aimed at enriching staff awareness of diverse perspectives, promoting equity, and nurturing a culture of inclusivity and belonging. Despite the evolving landscape facing our country, Habitat Wake remains steadfast and is resolved to fulfill our mission of seeking to put God’s love into action to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
