Courageous Conversation: Code Switching
“Why do you talk so proper?” “Why did you change your voice when you answered the phone?” You may have heard these questions before in response to what has been socialized in the workplace for years…code-switching! “Code-switching” is a term that has joined the mainstream, and refers to the act of changing our behaviors, including speech, dress, and mannerisms, to conform to a different cultural norm than what we might authentically do in our own homes.
In this Courageous Conversation, we will break down the history of code-switching, explore code reading, and why it has been a survival tactic for vulnerable populations in the workplace. Come ready to learn the importance of the pillars of Inclusion: Vulnerability, Compassion, Humility, Grace, and Empathy and how they can be used to see and name differences in the workplace in order to foster a more authentic culture. This session will also educate on the importance of allyship and provide some tangible tips on how to stop coding and start sharing! Lastly, participants will engage in conversations about difference and practice interactive exercises to empower authenticity.

Ashley Gaddy
Founder and Head Consultant, Ashley Gaddy Enterprises
We will hear from Ashley Gaddy, the founder and head consultant of Ashley Gaddy Enterprises, an agency that focuses on authentic leadership and inclusivity practices. Ashley also serves as the Director of Business Development and Marketing at Cook Ross, a DEI consulting firm in the DMV area. She has previously worked in Higher Education, Corporate Sales, and Telecommunications. As a Black woman who has worked mostly in predominately white spaces in the south, Ashley spends much time advocating for vulnerable identity groups and learning about the barriers they face.
